Outside the Wire was written as a play by Jimi Stanton as a way to say thank you to his brother, Army SSG David Stanton. David was deployed three times; once to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan. After David had returned home, Jimi saw that life would never be normal again. Not for David and not for his family. Jimi knew that the only way that both sides would listen to each other and try to honestly understand what the other had gone through was for them to sit down and watch it.

Jimi then set about to write Outside the Wire based off of David's experiences both during and after coming home from war. While loosely based off of David's experiences, the story jumps back and forth to the character "Mark Mercer" while in Iraq and 6 months later at home with his wife, "Michelle" and 4 year old daughter, "Haley".

It was originally produced by Cornerstone Performing Arts Center in Fitchburg, MA in November, 2010 before premiering at the Boston Center for the Arts in July, 2011. It was then produced independently by what is now A2B Films at the Capital Fringe Festival in Washington, DC in 2013. After the Boston run, Outside the Wire was nominated for an IRNE (Independent reviewers of New England) for "Best New Play".

As a testament to the message in Outside the Wire, Jimi was awarded a special citation at a special Veteran's Day ceremony at the Massachusetts Statehouse for all of the awareness and help that Outside the Wire produced. It was given by Secretary Coleman Nee of Veteran Services.
